History
The Pattaya Backgammon League was formally organized in the early 1990's by Goran Hasselquist until 2002 when he returned to Sweden with his family in other pursuits. There have been a few changes in the organizers/directors since.
Guy Michelet organized the Thailand Open at the 19th Hole on famous Walking Street as well as Karsten Nielsen (2006), this is also the location where the Thailand Open was hosted in all previous years until the Super Pub closed in late 2006. Since then the event has been at Somboons Restaurant on Dong Tarn Beach where Gerhard Schulze was the director for 2008 and 2009. From 2010 to 2011 Gabriel Davis with help from World Champion Masayuki Mochizuki organized and directed.

Without formal organizing, backgammon has always had a 'scene' in Pattaya, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. There was also a large tournament held in Bangkok in 1988 which even had sponsors from Nescafe and others which was reviewed in the Bangkok Post. Since this event was pre-internet a member of the PBL will have to go to the Bangkok Posts library and find it.

Many famous backgammon players have passed through our scene even if not playing in the Thailand Open. Jorgen Grandstedt, Philip Marmorstein and Masayuki Mochizuki aka Mochy come to mind. Other famous players of backgammon and poker include Paul Weaver, Phil Laak and Jake Jacobs.

In the near future, it is our objective to formally set up the Asian Pacific Backgammon Tour in co-operation with the Japanese Backgammon League (JPL), the Hong Kong League, Pattaya Backgammon League and the Australian Backgammon League. It is also our hope to add the resort in the Philippines, Virac as another stop on the tour.
